Intractable Human Rights Situations and Failed International Responses to Crises

Global Classroom is a conference organized by the European Inter-University Center for Human Rights and Democratization (EIUC) that dates back to 2013.

It is an educational platform that incorporates research about human rights and democracy worldwide, by bringing together students with professors and experts on the field. This year, its topic was Intractable Human Rights Situations and Failed International Responses to Crises and it was held from 9th to 13th May in Lido, Venice, at the EIUC institution.

Having in mind Macedonia takes a considerable part of the Balkan route of the current refugee crises, and Legis has helped significantly since 2014, we had a representative as well.

Tara Petkovska therefore could vividly explain her personal experience as part of Legis on the field working with refugees at the transit center “Vinojug”, Gevgelija, Macedonia, and discuss with representatives from MSF Greece, Helsinki Citizen’s Assembly Turkey and UN.

The topics covered the development of the situation in the camps, the consequences of the EU-Turkey deal, vulnerable groups, smugglers’ business and future possible scenarios. The panel discussion was fruitful and raised many questions as well as interest for possible solutions.
