TWO MIGRANTS HARD INJURED FROM TRAIN IN GEVGELIJA

A train operating the Gegvelija-Skopje route hit two migrants at the train station in Smokvica on the morning of August 30, around 5 a.m. The migrants were taken to the Skopje Clinic for Anesthesia Reanimation and Intensive Care due to the severe injuries. The Ministry of Interior announced that both migrants are from Algeria, aged 26 and 27.

“This morning an ambulance brought both persons to Gevgelija Hospital. The injured were given the necessary medical assistance, they got X-rayed and one of the patients suffered a head fracture, whereas the other experienced multiple traumatic injuries. Both migrants were taken to the Skopje Clinic for Anesthesia Reanimation and Intensive Care”, the Director of Gevgelija General Hospital Mitko Krdjev said.

According to an employee of the train station, there were six persons lying on the railway tracks, four of them ran away, whereas two of them got hit by the train.

Other media sources say that one of the injured has passed away, however there has been no official information yet.

At the peak of the 2014-2016 refugee crisis, over 30 refugees lost their lives on the railway tracks while transiting to the EU countries, whereas since the closure of the Balkan Route in 2016 up until today irregular migration has been on the rise, which has lead to an increase in the number of injured and deceased.
