On paper they may work, but in reality, it is an unknown noun. Some live here even a year or more, but still, they are denied many essential rights. They escaped from their home countries, and when they came to North Macedonia to seek asylum, they faced new challenges, which made their lives even more difficult.
Examples are not rare when an asylum seeker in the country, who was staying in a reception center, also wanted to work. However, the civil court made a negative decision, because he did not have an identification number, and therefore no bank account.
The law allows participation in the labor market, but not the registration system, which does not give these people a personal identification number. This is because the law itself in Article 61 does not provide a legal possibility to determine the identity number of asylum seekers, as one of the conditions for them to be registered in the Employment Agency and to have access to the labor market.
The fact is that North Macedonia is mostly a transit country for refugees, in order to find a better life in one of the European countries. However, all this does not mean that people seeking asylum in the country should be neglected and their basic rights should be denied at the expense of lengthy procedures and legal deficiencies. The associations and the Ombudsman are unanimous that the way to achieve a functional legal system largely includes the way in which those who, through no fault of their own, are left without adequate rights and protection are treated.
