The Journey of One Syrian Woman

My name is Agrin, I am 25 years old and I am from Syria. I left my country together with my husband because of the war. My husband had a store in Syria and he was earning well, our financial situation was good there. But his store got bombed and part of my university was bombed as well. At that time, I had just finished my third year at university (I was studying Arabic). So this is when we decided to leave.

The journey was not easy at all, we went to Turkey first and then to Greece. Coming to Greece was especially difficult, the first attempt failed because we were with a lot of other people and the boat was extremely small, the weather was extremely windy and we thought we were about to drown in the sea. So we went back to Turkey. After some time, we tried again and this time, we managed to reach Greece. Unfortunately, at that point, the borders were getting closed, so we got stuck in Eidomeni at the border with Macedonia. I was in the fourth month of my pregnancy then and we spent around four months in Greece. Living in a small tent in Eidomeni was very challenging. At times it was too rainy, too sunny – and all we had was a small tent…There were so many people stuck in Eidomeni, it wasn’t even safe to stay there, especially for a pregnant woman. When we finally managed to cross into Macedonia, we went to the camp in Gevgelija and registered there. We stayed there for 10 months. I gave birth to my baby in Macedonia, only after a week we had crossed into Macedonia. In the camp we had a room, but we shared it with another family, so life with our small baby and another family in one room was also quite challenging. We decided to seek asylum in Macedonia, but after a month of waiting, we were afraid that we will never be given the asylum. So we decided to go back to Greece, where we legally applied for asylum in the EU through the relocation system. The relocation system only works in countries which are part of the European Union and you don’t choose the country where you will be sent. After six months of waiting, we were finally sent to France where we got a refugee status.

I am thankful to Macedonians who were either working or volunteering in the camp in Gevgelija, because of everything they did. Even when they couldn’t do something more, they gave us warmth and smiles and despite the fact that most of our journey is burdened with bad memories, we will keep these good memories as well. I still keep in touch with some of these Macedonians, they sometimes ask how I am doing, I send them photos of our life in France, of my baby and they are happy. I am not angry at Macedonia for not opening the borders, because I know that this was not in the hands of Macedonia. Instead, I decide to keep the good memories – all the friendships we made.
